EVEN IN SHADOWS, THERE IS LIGHT

切谷組

Being known for having quite a number of shinobi in the clan's employ, it wasn't until at the end of the Age of Blood at the clan began to be noticed. Thanks to the efforts and knowledge brought upon by Kiritani no Michihiro, the small clan was granted a seat in the Bakufu, effectively granting their leader "daimyo."

THE AGE OF BLOOD'S END

SEAT & BACKGROUND

The fairly small clan of the Kiritani sided with the much larger and more famous (or perhaps infamous) Mitsurugi clan during the end of the Age of Blood. One prominent head of a clan, Kiritani no Michihiro, was one of the few ninja generals who contributed to ending the 600-year civil war. Intel was key and his specialty, and Michihiro was instrumental in obtaining it.As a result, he was granted a high position of power as a representative of his small clan. While he was already considered a daimyo, he was officially granted a seat in the formation of the Bakufu that followed, agreeing to the isolationist policies set forth by the Mitsurugi clan.Kiritani no Michihiro later extended his family line and bore a son and a daughter: Naomasa and Chihiro respectively. While Chihiro would later marry into a different clan of similar stature to the Kiritani, Naomasa later became daimyo when his father died of old age. Naomasa himself then extended the clan line further and later bore two sons and a daughter: Isshin, Motoaki, and Fuyumi.Naomasa then decided to retire his position and give it to his son Isshin, who is the current daimyo of the Kiritani clan. Isshin has two sons: Yuji and Kyo.

FURTHER BACKGROUND

THE WAY OF KIRITANI

The scripts used for the Kiritani clan are perhaps a bit more colourful than its usual meaning. The script used for 'kiri' is cut.
The script used for 'tani' is valley.
It is said that this clan has taken up this name because of their strong connection to the ninja and ninjutsu arts. Many men and women who have been trained in the art of combat typically chose to become shinobi and kunoichi as opposed to becoming a samurai and bushido, having less strict codes of conduct. While both combat arts (iaido and ninjitsu) use weapons that cut, the usage of tani signifies more freedoms in their combat art of choice. The current daimyo, Isshin, and first son Yuji are shinobi. Kyo, however, is an exception to this. While he would have made a great shinobi with the proper training and guidance, there were other plans for him.Descendants of Kiritani no Michihiro typically have an orange hue to their hair. Kyo and his older brother Yuji are perfect examples of this, as is their father Isshin. While there have been several lines of the Kiritani branching out onto other clans, Kyo and his family are direct descendants of Michihiro. When Michihiro died of natural causes, his son Naomasa took his place. However, Isshin's wife Rinon comes from a clan (Imagawa) of onmyoji who can call upon the forces of the elements and nature. This was a trait that Kyo picked up and uses extensively to this day.As the clan continued to grow and extend, they are becoming more weary about their nation's isolationist policies and favours opening the entire nation to outsiders, not just Kugane. However, the clan does not wish to go against the shogunate's current policies but will provide input on the matter if and when needed.

OF FREEDOM AND SHADOWS

切谷の悠士

Even for a shinobi such as he, he still maintains a positive, happy-go-lucky and lighthearted nature. Despite this, he is very cautious of letting people close to him. While easy to meet, he is difficult to get to know.

OF LIGHT AND BENEVOLENCE

切谷の恭

Despite striving for a simple life, the things he is capable of can be anything but simple. He tends to downplay his capabilities if only to strive for said simple life but he's aware that not everything is so simple.

THE KIRITANI CLAN TREE (CONDENSED)

Below is the family tree for the Kiritani clan. Please keep in mind that this is not completely expansive (nor is it complete) and shows a general idea of how many generations the Kiritani family go back. At least those who have been properly documented.

• As mentioned above, this not a complete nor is it an expansive list. Names in a light blue box are males and names in a light pink box are females. Their names in parentheses denote their maiden surnames. This means that if a female member of this tree has a different last name in their parentheses, this means they came from a different clan. If a female has Kiritani in the parentheses, this means they are originally from the Kiritani clan.
• Names in black means they are still alive. Names in grey denote that they have passed away.
• As per usual on family/clan trees, older children are on the left side and younger children are towards the right.
• For the purposes of this page, this only denotes branching out starting with the brothers Yuji and Kyo. The brothers actually have many cousins from the one aunt and two uncles. For example, Jirou Kiritani and Satsuki Kiritani (Miyamoto) have children as well. In fact, Isshin's siblings all have at least three children that are not listed here.
• All the Kiritani family members in the same generation as their father, their ages are as follows as of this post (17 Jun 2024): Isshin is 69, Jirou is 65, Megumi (Hayabusa) is 63, and Kazuya is 60. All are still alive (as are their spouses) and with the exception of Isshin, all have grandchildren already.
